Metal Zone: El pedal que cambió el Metal en los 90

Estamos hablando de un instrumento que nos dió una relación amor-odio en la segunda mitad de los 90. Estamos hablando del Metal Zone de BOSS…. ¿Que no sabes de lo que estamos hablando? Existe una leyenda urbana sobre el incentivo que empleados de tiendas de música, recibían por vender estos pedales.
Si alguna vez tuviste la experiencia religiosa de tener un Metal Zone, reconocerás ese sonido a gato asustado en tu hombro, a chicharra sin control, ese siseo ensordecedor… Era un ruido ensordecedor que miles de padres y madres sufrieron en la mitad de los 90. Es muy probable, que si fueras un adolescente metalero de aquella época, recibieras una guitarra eléctrica y un Metal Zone. ¿Es que con un nombre tan apropiado como fallar?. Todos quisimos creer que la moto-sierra sueca provenía del Metal Zone. Ilusos. Años después se descubrió que dicho pedal era el Heavy Metal 2 de BOSS. Un pedal precursor y que no vendió tanto como el Metal Zone, pues fue lanzado en 1983. Un periodo del metal en el que las bandas gastaran su dinero en laca y cerveza y no en pedales o sonido.
Si todavía no habéis tenido la suerte de apreciar la maravilla de electrónica que es nuestro amado Metal Zone. Aquí os dejo un video de 7 Metal Zone en cadena. Mi aprecio por Whitehouse, Ryoji Ikeda o Merzbow hubiera sido imposible. El chicharreo de mi guitarra Hyundai con Metal Zone, rodeado de posters de la Grind zone, fueron esenciales.
Pero como todo en la vida, el metal tiene gustos para todo e incluso hay bandas que reivindican el Metal Zone años después de su momento de gloria. Este es el caso de Biffy Clyro (Me niego a poner enlace) o The Vines, que incluso dedican un tema a esta pieza de la historia del metal…
Incluso críticos de pedales y amplificadores en Youtube nos enseñan, 25 años después, que usábamos el Metal Zone de la manera equivocada. Ellos han aprendido gracias a nuestro sufrimiento y tinnitus.
